cavalex models’ August 2020 update

4mm BBA and BLA

We are delighted to announce that our second model, the BBA long steel carrier wagon, has arrived in the U.K.

Following the release of our first model, the well-received 1:76 scale PGA hopper wagon, we are really pleased to see the production models of our first bogie wagon design in the flesh.

A lot of time and effort was spent researching the BBA wagon in order to best replicate the features and finer details of the prototype in the design of our model.

We felt that it was very important to continue evolving and using innovation to bring a new approach to our models. We feel that this has been achieved and can be seen in the photos below showing the fine details that have been incorporated in these models.

Etched mesh deck

Probably the most noticeable and stand out feature of this particular wagon is the mesh deck. This has been reproduced extremely well on this model with the fine etched mesh allowing you to see through the deck in between the steel mainframe as per the prototype.

Prototypical replica bogie

During a visit to Scunthorpe to view the real wagons, it was decided to take a different approach to modelling the FBT6 bogies for our first bogie wagon. For the first time on a ready to run model, rather than just model the bogie with side frames and a cross brace, we wanted the BBA wagon to have a prototypical replica bogie with as much detail as practically possible to be included. We felt that it would not be appropriate for a model with a wealth of detail and features to be sat on a very basic bogie.

The model FBT6 bogie includes; ride height pipe-work for the load sensor (SAB - Self Adjusting Braking system), brake callipers, and brake boards. The wheel sets have brake discs as per the prototype. As you can see from the photos below, the bogie itself is a model in its own right.

A NEM blanking plate has been included to improve the cosmetic look of the bogie to give it a more prototypical appearance when at the end of a train.

Fully detailed underframe

As with our PGA wagon, the BBA has a fully detailed underframe with intricate pipe-work as per the prototype.
